Fablehaven: Rise of the Evening Star 2

Week's Reading: Chapters 8-14 by March 24th

  1. Wow, Pooped him out! I should have known--- the book was written by a man. But then again we all know that “Everybody Poops”. Me I was wondering how they were going to get the frog to throw-up. That’s the way girls think. It is a good thing he wet poo before he started turning back into a statue.

I was so frustrated when Coulter was able to get Seth to go with him. I still wasn’t convinced that he was the traitor (it was too easy) but I didn’t think it was a good idea to be taking an inexperienced little boy on such a mission. It frustrated me that though Seth tried to think it through a little better he still let his need to prove himself override his better judgment. I kept thinking, “will he never learn”. I just read a book called “The Survivor’s Club”. Two of the things that you need to remember to be a survivor is stay focused and to know where your exits are. I was impressed with Coulter. He was startled to find himself out there but stayed very focused and put all of his energy into saving Seth. I have always liked him. As I said earlier he reminds me of Madeye Moody from Harry Potter.
Then I began to think Seth was getting it when he stayed calm in the cocoon. He seemed to use good sense until he reached the mansion. Then before he left the house he lost his focus and started to think of wealth. However it was interesting that when he saw the dust devil starting to form he knew he had to stay focused on the exit and how to get out. According to the other book he is a survivor. I think he is finally starting to get it and is gaining skills to go with his courage and smarts. As he does he and Kendra will make a strong team.
As for Kendra I am impressed with her courage and ability to think things through. When Vanessa was causing all the commotion she acted well and didn’t panic. Once she was on her own she didn’t wander aimlessly but thought of two places to go to find help or safety. Way to go Kendra! Was Lena the one who send Mendigo out of the water. Was it not to attack but to help her? The fairy told her she had stronger powers than was controlling Mendigo. How is she going to learn to use those powers. It sounds like the Fairy Queen likes her. Will she have another encounter with her? I have to keep reminding myself that Kendra is only 14. She is mature for her age and one who can handle the powers she has been given. I was also impressed that she is guarding against sleep so that Vanessa can’t control her. I would never have thought of that, especially under all that stress.
So is Christopher Vogel someone we have already met? Will he be Errol? It makes me nervous knowing he is out there and we don’t know who or what he is

  2. So do you think Kendra will go back to the pond and get Lena to help, or do you think it is a lost cause at this point? I think that Kendra is going to get the cup back from the naiads somehow and give it back to the Fairy queen eventually (perhaps not in this book). I am anxious to see what Kendra can do once she knows how to work her powers. The fairies seem to sense she has a lot of powers. I think Kendra will be the one to eventually heal Warren and Coulter. It would be nice if she could heal Warren now and have him help her to fight Vanessa.

How did Grandpa figure so quickly that the traitor was Vanessa—how did he know it wasn't Tanu? I was glad to find out that Coulter wasn't really bad, but I wished that the Christopher guy in the registry was the the one making the others do what he wanted against their will (instead of Vanessa). I'm still waiting to see what or who he is and where and what he has been doing all this time. Vanessa could have taken Seth and Kendra captive when she picked them up at their house, but didn't. This makes me think that for some reason she needed them there. Maybe they felt that the kids were the key to getting what they need from the Grandparents.

I was think about what Mary had said for last weeks assignment about people who are deceitful smooth talkers. I am beginning to think that is a reacquiring message. We learn that with Case, then Errol, and now Vanessa too (she appears beautiful, creating a great disguise).

Earlier, Coulter had told Seth and Kendra that if they were ever in a predicament he would never endanger himself to save them—he would save himself. So I thought it was neat that Coulter sacrificed himself by giving Seth the glove and Cocoon.

I am anxious to see what Seth and Kendra are able to come up with to save Fablehaven. They will have to be careful about how they react to Grandma and Grandpa now that there is a chance that Vanessa may try controlling them too.

  3. Did Coulter tell them he would save himself first to tell them that that is what they should do trying to keep them safe.
It would have been nice if it was that Christopher guy but then who let him in?
Lana, do you think there is some importance in getting the cup back to the Fairy Queen?

  4. I DO think the reason that Coulter told them about the importance of saving themselves was to insure that they would keep themselves safe rather than trying to be a hero. (Little good did it do!)

I thought about the Christopher guy getting someone on the inside to let him in, but I was hopping that he was able to control them even while he was on the outside.

I think that if Kendra was to give the cup back to the rightful owner, not only would it show respect to and appriciation for the Fairy Queen, but it might open doors for her to be taught about her powers and how to use them. It is just a guess. I just think that it is the right think to do weather or not she gets anything out of it. Maybe she will convince Lena to come out of the pond and Lena will bring the cup with her to return it to Kendra. That would probably be too easy! I think maybe something concerning both the cup and Lena will happen in the next book.

  5. I really enjoyed their meeting with the sphinx. He definitely seems very wise. What do you think happened to him…? Grandma said there have been several times that he is hard to get a hold of due to moving around, but I think something else has happened. I hope he is okay!?

I was very shocked that Seth went away with Coulter!! After all his mistakes he really never learns does he?! He knows that there is a traitor in the group; his grandparents haven’t hid their suspicions. So why is he trusting a creepy old man in the middle of the night to go deep in the forest where Olloch is waiting for him? If anything, that would keep me from going into the woods. Talking about Olloch…I was so surprised that it was him that jumped out when Seth was with the Satyrs. I was not ready for that. I figured it would be some big ugly troll or something else of the sort. The author really knows how to keep the story rolling.

I thought it was creepy when Seth and Coulter were in the area of the four hills. Whatever that phantom thing was was really scary. I could totally picture him with his smiling face just floating towards them at a slow menacing pace. I wouldn’t need to have the added power of fear that was pressing down on them to be scared into an albino. At least we know a little more of what happed to Warren.
Cracked me up how Seth was Pooed out! Go figure! Once again, totally deserved it!

I’m definitly thinking that Christopher guy is Errol. They haven’t really introduced any other characters so it must be him. Unless it’s the Sphinx, but I highly doubt that.
Also, no shock that it was Vanessa. I was leery of her ever since so picked them up at their house.

    Very excited to finish reading!

I'm with Lana....somthing is going to happen with Kendra trying to return the cup in this book or the next.

  6. Do you think that the Sphinx is unavailable for some reason or have they messed with the phone lines again so that Vanessa can do her thing. Because he seems to have so much power do think he has to move around a lot to keep from being detected. Good thought about the possibility of someone influencing Venessa from outside. Could she be a victim too?

I am sure the cup is going to be important. Don't know how though. I do think that Kendra will have to use some more power before the book is out. I am still thinking about the Jinn and am really convinced that Seth just might be able to get pass him because he will not be tricked into thinking too deeply. He is a "man of action".

  7. I'm glad that it was Vanessa instead of Coulter that was the bad guy. It really creeped me out when Olloch came to the tennis court to eat Seth. But I am glad that Dorren and Newel helped save the day.

When I was reading about the phantom thing-a-ma-bob, I was so scared that I didn't want to read any more but I couldn't stop reading! I couldn't stand it when Coulter was screaming it made me want to scream myself.

I think that Kendra will be struck with an idea of how to use her magic to save both Coulter and Warren.

  8. Jaci, I am glad I am not the only one who was routing for Coulter. I too felt horrible when he was screaming. I was afraid he was dead.

I think Dorren and Newel are funny. They always have an excuse not to help but they sure helped Seth. I am so glad you are reading with us. Great comments. Do you have an idea as to how Kendra might help Warren and Coulter. I hope she can.

  9. First of all, I was very annoyed at Seth. How dense can you get? He knows that someone is the traitor, but still goes with Coulter. Even though it turned out that Coulter wasn't the "traitor," Seth was still led into a trap by the real traitor. He should have listened to his inner voice of going to grandpa. I suppose he felt so guilty about the frog deamon...but he should have known better. I hope he learns soon!

  10. I just finished my chapters, too many distractions the past week! I don't have much to add to what everyone has already written. I would like to say that even though Seth still does foolish things, he is growing wiser quickly. He is only Kait's age, they don't always think like adults do. I think kids forget to think about consequences, just act on the moment. I feel like he is figuring it out. It is like he as an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other, he's just not sure which argument to go with. But at least he is trying to think things through a little more. He totally deserved to be pooped out though. Another life lesson!
I'm anxious to see what is going to happen next. I do want to mention something I forgot to mention the first time around. I can't help wandering if the artifact might be with the jinn. It is suppose to be in an inverted tower, which makes me think under the ground - which is where the jinn is. Something to think about. Who knows.
