  1. This book has been fun so far. I really like the chapter headings--they crack me up!

I think it is funny how Percy is so slow to believe any of what is happening. He has experienced strange abilities of his own (strength, & fluency in Ancient Greek) and yet he still has a hard time believing he might be something more than just human. It is simular to our tendency to be slow to recognize our abilities and believe in our own potential.

It was mentioned during their conversation playing pinochle that it was a big deal for Chiron to go meat and teach Percy at the school. Latter Chiron says his job is to teach and train future heros. This is a pretty obvious hint that Percy is seen as a potential hero, yet Percy didn't seem to catch it. Chiron ins't really giving him any staight answers though either.

I like Chiron/Mr. Brunner. He Seems wise and understanding. That is how I imagined a centaur to be.

I'm sad that the mother...disapeared...or died...or something. She was so brave and showed so much love for her little boy.

  2. You beat me, Lana! I started the first chapter yesturday and I couldn't stop! I am so curious as to where the story is going to go...

I too find it interesting that Percy is having a hard time accepting and believing everything, though I would act in the same way even though I have had odd experiences as well. If I was told throughout my whole life that these things are fake and a part of my imagination, I would probably believe it especially if all of a sudden there was no such person as Mrs. Dobbs.

Those three old ladies creeped me out. I knew they were up to no good. I wonder if the person that was going to die was Percy's mother? Or is it suppose to be Percy? Hmmm...

I don't neccessarily like Mr.D, but I can't help but think he is funny. It is probably because I am familiar with him in Greek mythology. Though I too like Chiron. I didn't expect him to be a centaur! I am anxious to learn more about him; I don't remember him from the Greek myths.

  3. I'm liking the book so far. Like Lana I love the titles of each chapter. I like the voice of the story, reminds me of how my girls tells stories. The book is very fast paced and I love that too. Keeps your interest! I liked the opening probably the best, the warning to put the book down. Cute. I felt for the mother, not wanting to let go of her son. I also liked how she was always finding or making blue food just to spite her husband. I like her spunk. I'm hoping she will be back somehow, since she may not be dead-dead.
It seems to me that Percy has a lot of adventures on the way! I think Lana is right about Percy being a future hero with Chiron going out of his way to become his teacher. Kind of like Harry Potter. He started out about the same age too. I'm anxious to learn what Percy can do and to learn more about who his father is and whey he abandoned him.

  4. It is a fun read. I am amazed though at how much he sounds like Harry Potter. Black hair, green eyes, getting in trouble with powers he doesn't understand he has, not being raised in a home environment, female Malfoys, school to teach him what he is and how to manage it. Also different house according to who you are and half bloods. Will Mr. Brunner (Chiron)be another Dumbledore.
My favorite statement was that the things that were happen had to be real because he didn't have much of an imagination. He couldn't have thought that up. Sounds like how I would think. That made me really chuckle.

Mr. D. sounds like the little fat guy in Fantasia with all the mythylogical creatures who was drinking the wine. He was round faced and looked like at cherub. Is that who he is suppose to be. It make me want to study up on Mythology. I don't remember getting it in high school, just picked up a little here and there. Maybe by the end of the book I will have a pretty good background. I too was surprised to find that Chiron was a centaur. His comment about the other centaurs prefering to stay in the forrest also made me think of Harry Potter. Must be the their nature as described in mythology. Since
Percy is a half blood, I assume his mother was human. Does that mean that there is no chance for her to come back. Why did she disappear when she was attacked. Do they want us to speculate that she might come back?
I am glad we read the 6th chapter. I loved the bully and her friends getting their "just deserts". I think we all had moments when we were that age that we would have like to be able to have his powers. Could have used it with my brothers. Just think what he will be able to do when he knows how to use them fully. I am so curious to know who his father is. It is tempting to look at the end but I am being good.

  5. Rosena, yes Mr. D is the same person that is in Fantasia. That is why I think it is funny. He is the God of wine. I thought it was funny that he was being punished by his father for messing around with women because, if you remember, he was chasing all of the female creatures in
    Fantasia. :)

So who do you guys think Percy's father is?

  6. First off...Elisa, I just love your picture!

I've been thinking about the Mother dieing also. I think she will come back into the story. If not in this book, then one of the later ones. What I've been wondering though is why did she disappear with light, rather than a how humans die? Is she more that just human? Maybe SHE is a half blood making Percy 3/4 blood. That would mean that he will be more powerful and a reason why Chiron would be more interested in him.

I also get a kick out or Mr. D because I can totally picture him. It would be hard being a half blood and feeling like your father can really care less about you (especially the undetermined) but could you imagine being a child of Mr. D who obviously has a disdain for the children at the camp. I'd rather belong to one of the other gods and hope in the slight chance that they really do care about me.

Like Rosena, this book has peeked my curiosity to study a bit of mythology. Emily is lucky that she has recently gone over such material in college.

I think I know who the father is, but I'm not going to share because I saw a preview to the movie that gives a huge hint.

  7. Godd Idea Lana, I kept thinking that his mother was wasn't human but then we know his father was the one who wasn't human. I too think she might be half blood. The way she died has to be telling us something.

They said his father was lost at sea. Is he Posiden (Neptune)

  8. I'm not going to believe for a second that Percy's mom died! She just has so be okay! (i'm hoping that i'm just not in denial). So far I've really enjoyed the book. I cracked me up at the part when Percy, his mom, and Grover where in the car and Percy called Grover half donkey. Grover bleated out a "blaa-ha-ha..." and percy remembered all the times he had heard him make that noise before. It made me think of all the weird noises i make.
I am curious as to why none of his watchers know who Percy's father is? You would think his Mom would have known and passed on the information to those trying to protect him. (like Lana I saw a preview and have a good idea who the father is.)
Also, what is the real story about Percy's step dad Gabe? Is he really a kindly one possibly spying on percy?
I'm excited to see what happens next!

  9. I didn't think about Gabe being a Kindly One! Maybe...

  10. I'm with the rest of you. I can't believe the mother died. It's so sad...

All the blue, I thought that was rather funny. I aslo was thinking Gabe might be a Kindly One, but he seems so dumb I doubt he'd make it. Maybe he's just an evil guy who knows something funny is going on? I'm curious what he's going to do when he finds out that his wife is dead!

The camp sounds like a very interesting one to have gone to! I almost wish there had been a camp like that for me! Learning sword fighting and running in the forests? Sounds like fun to me! I've greatly enjoyed reading this book so far.

  11. I also liked all of the blue! I have been tempted to put some food dye in our food just to see what Brian has to say. :)

  12. I think there has to be something to Gabe. He is just not the typical guy that a person like his mother would be married to. She seemed really smart. The type of person that would do the blue food just to spite Gabe is not the type of person who would be stuck with Gabe for no reason. The question is why would she want to be married to him. Percy says it is just bad luck, but I think there is a good intelligent reason.

  13. I,m with Lana. I can't figure why his mother married Gabe. Good Idea Janae that he might be a Kindly one. That would fit. However, I think he is going to me more upset that his car was destroyed than that his wife is dead.

If I tried dying Lanis's food blue he would just think it was cool.

  14. So Janae, you say that when Grover bleated out "blaa-ha-ha..." it reminded you of all the weird noises that you make. So if you were really some mythological creature what would you be (based on the noises you make)!?!

  15. Good question...... Based on the fact that my friends have said on numerous occation I sound like a goat... I'd have to say satyr. Maybe that's how come I thought it was so funny. How 'bout that?! I'm a Satyr and didn't even know it.

  16. You're a mighty cute one,though. ;)

  17. This book is different than the last one we read given it starts out quickly letting is know that there is something different or special about Percy. I bet it will be a relief to him when he started to realize that these problems he was having weren't all his fault

I too was sad that the mother dissappeared and I hope she will come back. I also think that she is a half breed or even a quarter. She seems to know more about what is going on than she was telling Percy. I get the since she was waiting to tell him when he was more mature.

  18. Yes, I think it would be a relief for Percy to realize what is really going on with all of the strange things that have happened to him. Though, I am surprised that no one told him what was going on earlier, especially after the Mrs. Dobbs incident. Why lie to him and make him think it was part of his imagination? Can't ignorance get you into trouble, especially when trouble (like a minotaur and creepy Mrs. Dobbs)is chasing after you? Chiron and Percy's mom seemed to think it best, but why? Is the idea that it would prevent him from seeking or attracting it?

  19. I've been wondering about the mom's parents dieing in the plane crash. Was that because of Zeus? If so, why? Or was it just a coincidence? Also, I'm curious about why Percy had a memory of his father smiling at him, when his mother told him his father left before he was born. Oh, and if Nae is a goat, I'm afraid of what that makes me? No comments please!!!! :)
