Fablehaven

This novel looks like it may be a little easier and quicker to read than The Christmas Carol was, so for this week we will read the first three chapters of Fablehaven and see how it goes. If it is too much for this week, we will decrease the reading for next week.

Week's Reading: Chapter 1-3 by January 17th

Happy Reading!

  1. It sure didn,t take Seth long to go into the woods! Maybe it is like going on a diet and telling yourself that you can,t have chocolate. After that you can only think of chocolate. At least he used some good sence in being sure he could find his way out and not letting the witch lure him in. I am amazed that he even withstood the temptation when she used pride to try and get him to put his hand in the box. Boys don't like anyone to think they are scared.
My favorite parts of the first three chapters were first his discription of the scenery passing and comparing it to the past present and future. You can see the past, vision the future, but the present is often blurred. This made sense to me. It is often hard to see the total effect of what you are doing and maybe that is why we make so many mistakes. We just don't get the whole picture right away.
Second - I laughed out loud when Kendrea wondered what lunatic had decided that when people died you should hire a taxidermist to fix them up for one final look. I don't like seeing people after they die and have never thought they really look like themselves either. GOOD DISCRIPTION.
Ah ha, I beat you Elisa

  2. I loved the beginning, by the first few paragraphs I was hook, line, and sinker into the book. I did so well not reading past the second chapter *chuckles* Was very excited that I could go on! I tried to convince my parents that a cruise when they died was a very neat idea! They didn't go for it, asking if maybe the 'leak' in the trailor was really accidental or not. How sad, I tried though!

I loved the descriptions in the book. The signs saying no tresspassing and the way that the father said it was probably inherited? Such a great way to assure himself! I agree with Rosena, it didn't take long at all. I'm not sure if I could have stopped from going in. The way that he stopped from going in was amazing, I love how he remembered that about sharks teeth (I didn't know that!). My favorite part is the keys. I've always been a puzzle person myself. I'd very much be like Kendra and looking for what the keys went to. The idea of a secret passage? I can't wait to find out if it's really there!

  3. I'm really enjoying it so far! The witch was really creepy! I also thought for sure Seth was going to put his hand in the box. Who knows what her plans were for him?! I could pretty much guarantee they weren't good. I'm also curious who/what was throwing the pebbles and following him when he was running back to the house. And what is up with the milk that Dale was putting out?! I know there is somthing fishy going on there. So many questions....I'm excited to find out the answers!

  4. I also wonder if the butterflies, dragonflies and such that are drawn to the mirror and the milk are really fairies and they didn't look closely enough. What think all of you?
Hi Nae, I am glad you are with us this time. I missed you with the last one.

  5. I am like Janae—I too have been thinking about the milk. I think it is obvious that there is something to the milk that Dale is supposedly keeping secret. I had to laugh at how quick Seth went to the woods! I’m not sure if something was following him or if it was a spell that the old lady cast on him. It is apparent, however, that the house and yard is some kind of safe haven for the people staying there.
I would be too scared to go in the woods, especially after Seth’s experience, but after all the weird things that have been happening I certainly would be trying to sneak a peek into the barn. The grandfather never said that they couldn’t peek inside—he just said that they were not to go in because they could get hurt.
Like Andrea, I think it would be so fun to be given a set of keys to explore with, especially if there is a mystery to solve. Though I can’t help but think that the grandfather is up to something. On one hand he seems to be hiding something from the kids, and yet on the other hand he seems to want them to figure it out. Why else would he give Kendra the keys? What is he up too and where is his wife?

  6. Ya, I'm with Lana....Where is the wife???

  7. I think that one of them has to be there all the time. Maybe while she was alone when he went to the funeral she got attacked and being treated somewhere???????

  8. Or maybe something still has her!?!

  10. The wife...I can't wait to find out what's going with her! I was thinking the same thing Rosena was, that one of them had to be there all the time. So where is she now...can't wait to find out!

  11. Ok, after reading all of things everyone has written so far, I've decided that Lana is totally our Seth. She's trying to figure out the barn by going around the rules. SNEAKY LANA! I love it. I think I'm more like Kendra and would just follow the rules. I'm too chicken. Especially if there are old witches in the forest. She probably wants to eat him! The whole time I was thinking of Hansel and Gretal. She seemed very determined to lure him inside. At least he isn't a total idiot and had some sense not to follow a scary, smelly old woman who likes to chew on rope. CREEPY!! I'm surprised he even talked to her, I would have run as soon as she spotted me! I'm such a chicken! I think she summoned creatures of the forest to scare Seth or harm since she was unable to lure him. I guess we will see.
I also liked the drive up to the grandparents house. It reminded me of driving to mom and dad's house with my girls. I liked mom's (Rosena's) comments about the past, present, and future. I caught that too - and thought it was an interesting point. I wonder if it is suppose to foreshadow? I also got a kick out of the taxidermist. So true!!
I have also been wondering about Grandma. I've also thought maybe one person has to stay there at all times. Maybe she is away, or maybe she is being kept against her will. Or something else yet.
I found the mirror fascinating. Do the creatures like to look at themselves? What was up with that? That would be crazy to experience.
I am also intrigued with the keys. Like Lana, I have been wondering what Grandpa is up to. The keys seem to unlock a mystery, but Grandpa is very secretive. So why give them keys? Does he know what they unlock? So many mysteries! What is in the other part of the attic???
I like how the story has taken off quickly! It has definately caught my attention and I'm looking forward to more reading!
You beat me this time, mom! Good job!

  12. I guess I am rather naive about the keys. I thought he gave them to her to keep her mind occupied so that she wouldn't be thinking of the barn and the woods. You all have me now wondering if there is much more to it. I am glad it is time to read more chapters.
